Artist's Statement
I like to think that somehow, even though he died when I was
3 years old, some of my fascination with creating images came from my
Grandfather Case, who was prominent in the photographic industry during
the 30’s and who knew Ansel Adams. As a young child in the 50’s,
I bought my first camera, a Kodak Brownie, for $2.00 and a coffee can
wrapper. I have rarely been without a camera since those early days and
it has been a tool in my learning and teaching all my life.
I make 35mm color images that help me to reveal what I feel about the
natural world: its colors shapes, textures, lines, and forms. My background
in science supports my visual expressions on film where my goal is to
make a connection between myself and the observer. I try to make familiar
and simple things in nature acquire the elegance that I see through my
lenses. I hope my work inspires the observer, subconsciously or not, to
develop his or her own special vision and see beauty where one might not
even know to look. My lenses are my brushes and to create images that
transcend the ordinary, I must know exactly how each will visually express
the light that is painted on my film. I see an invisible image in my mind’s
eye and then endeavor to record it on emulsion. My years as a photography
instructor have helped me refine and express to my students myriad photographic
concepts, thereby becoming a better artist.
Projects
As my best
work comes from working alone in the field, since 1991 I have sought opportunities
to travel in the wilderness. I try every year to make a solo sojourn into
remote areas all over the United States. I camp in places like Death Valley,
Okefinokee Swamp, The Rockies, and lesser known locations such as The
Bisti Wilderness and the Sawtooth Range. Although there are spectacular
vistas everywhere I go, I also enjoy creating abstracts or close-ups that
will give the viewer a glimpse of what I feel about what I see in each
place. I wake up where the best subjects are in the best light. I work
at my own pace and gain my inspiration from the beauty around me. From
these trips has come a touring slide lecture entitled: "Death Valley,
Okefinokee and Beyond." A retrospective of some of these trips, sprinkled
with anecdotes of the places and the events, it is available as evening
entertainment during periods of gallery showings of my work.
